- Ganga Aarti In Varanasi Starts With Morning Aarti Then It Goes For Evening
In Varanasi, Ganga Aarti takes place every day by sunset at holy Dasaswamedh Ghat. This place is near Kashi Vishwanath Temple. It differs from the aartis at the places like Haridwar and Rishikesh. At these places, the River Aarathi is a low key affair, whereas it is a highly choreographed ceremony in Varanasi. Although it a spectacular must-see ceremony, some people consider it to be too much of an artificial and showy extravaganza. Hence, they consider it to be out of context at the spiritual level.
It is performed on a stage by a group of young pundits. All these people will be draped in saffron colored robes. With their puja plates, they spread out to different places in the Dasaswamedh Ghat. Normally, it commences with the blowing of a conch shell. Initially aarti will be in the form of waving of incense sticks in elaborate patterns. Later, the show graduates into the circling of large flaming lamps. These flaming lamps create a bright hue against the darkened sky. The pundits move the lamps in a synchronizing manner to the rhythmic chants of hymns and clang of cymbals. The heady scent of sandalwood thickly permeates the air. It is a beautiful event to watch. It generates the aura of bakthi in the minds of onlookers.
How To Attend The Varanasi Ganga Aarti?
To watch this spectacle, the people start arriving very early. They may arrive as early as 5 p.m. in order to get a good position for viewing the aarti. A novel and effective way of seeing it is by boat from the river. There are many shops in the vicinity that hire their balconies out to tourists. Alternatively, you can use these balconies to view the aarti. A maha aarti (great aarti) takes place on a particularly elaborate scale in Varanasi near the end of each year on Kartik Purnima.
